NASA's newest rocket successfully completed test flight Wednesday

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an agency of the United States government, responsible for the nation's public space program.NASA has led U.S. efforts for space exploration ever since, resulting in the Apollo missions to the Moon, the Skylab space station, and later the Space Shuttle. Currently NASA is supporting the International Space Station and developing new Ares I and V launch vehicles.NASA's newest rocket successfully completed a brief test flight Wednesday, the first step in a back-to-the-moon program that could yet be shelved by the White House.

The 327-foot Ares I-X rocket resembled a giant white pencil as it shot into the sky, delayed a day by poor weather.

Nearly twice the height of the spaceship it's supposed to replace — the shuttle — the skinny experimental rocket carried no passengers or payload, only throwaway ballast and hundreds of sensors. The flight cost $445 million.

NASA said the flight was a tremendous success, based on early indications.

"Oh, man. Well, how impressive is that," said Jeff Hanley, manager of NASA's space frontier program, known as Constellation. "You've accomplished a great step forward for exploration," he told launch controllers.

It was the first time in nearly 30 years that a new rocket took off from Kennedy Space Center. Columbia made the maiden voyage for the shuttle fleet back in 1981.

Liftoff, in fact, occurred 48 years and one day after the first launch of a Saturn rocket, a precursor to what carried astronauts to the moon during the Apollo program. The Saturn V moon rockets were the tallest ever built, an impressive 363 feet.

Wednesday's launch, three years in the making, represented the first step in NASA's effort to return astronauts to the moon. The White House, though, is re-evaluating the human spaceflight program and may dump the Ares I in favor of another type of rocket and possibly another destination.

The test flight attracted a large crowd.

The prototype moon rocket took off through a few clouds from a former shuttle launch pad at 11:30 a.m., 3 1/2 hours late because of bad weather. Launch controllers had to retest the rocket systems after more than 150 lightning strikes were reported around the pad overnight. Then they had to wait out interfering rain clouds, the same kind that thwarted Tuesday's try.

The ballistic flight did not come close to reaching space and, as expected, lasted a mere two minutes. That's how long it took for the first-stage solid-fuel booster to burn out and separate from the mock upper stage 25 miles up. But it will take months to analyze all the data from the approximately 725 pressure, strain and acceleration sensors.

Parachutes popped open and dropped the booster into the Atlantic, where recovery ships waited.

The upper portion of the rocket — all fake parts — were hurtled to an estimated altitude of 28 miles and then fell uncontrolled into the ocean. Those pieces were never meant to be retrieved.

It was all over in six minutes.

"Think about what we just did. Our first flight test and the only thing we're waiting on was weather," launch director Ed Mango told his team.

NASA contends the Ares I will be ready to carry astronauts to the International Space Station in 2015, four to five years after the shuttles are retired. But a panel of experts said in a report to President Barack Obama last week that it will be more like 2017, and stressed that the entire effort is underfunded.

The first Ares moon trip would be years beyond that under the current plan.

No matter what direction the Obama Administration takes, NASA managers expect to learn a lot from Wednesday's experimental flight, even if it's for another type of rocket. They said they already have learned a lot.

Hanley, for one, does not to hear anymore about the cloudy, electrically charged conditions — triboelectrification — that made it so difficult to get this test rocket off the ground. Future rockets will have proper protection.

"Whatever we end up flying, this will not be a problem," he promised.

Iowa State University has developed a learning robot

Iowa State University has developed their own humanoid robot to perform procedural learning. Though the robot lacks a lower body and is therefore unable to move around on its own, it has two (rather large) Barrett Whole Arm Manipulators for arms, and a custom-designed head with stereo vision capable of simple emotional expression. Its three-fingered hands are flexible enough to perform a variety of grasping motions, using fingers 1 and 3 as opposable thumbs when necessary.
The philosophy behind the research is to teach the robot the properties of its surroundings similar to the way a child or animal learns during early development, through direct experience. The robot has already learned to identify objects from the sounds they make when being touched, pushed, held, and shaken.
The robot used a pair of scissors to cut the ceremonial ribbon for the opening of Iowa State University’s Electrical and Computer Engineering building, where the robot makes its home in the Developmental Robotics Lab. Izaak Moody, an undergraduate in the College of Art and Design, is responsible for designing the robot’s friendly head, and has created some nice rendered animations showing the robot’s emotional range. The previously posted robot Archie from the Universities of Manitoba and Vienna could learn a lot from this. Videos and media after the break.

LG's first HDTV series is LH50 Series

The LG LH50 Series is a Full 1080p LCD HDTV series from LG's 2009 lineup. It uses a slightly different method of delivering 200Hz than its competitors. Rather than insert frames to create smoother motion, it uses backlight control to insert black frames instead. The result is great but on-par with its competitors rather than a point to set them apart. At a

native resolution of 1920x1080 it handles 1080p images beautifully and without any visual aberrations and the design and sound quality from the speakers is superb. The LH50 Series is an upgrade to the LH40 series and although both series include a 120Hz refresh rate, the LH50 series is LG's first HDTV series to feature ethernet connectivity which the LH40 series lacks. The LH50 Series includes four HDMI inputs and a USB port for access to digital music and photos. It also has LG's Smart Energy Saving Plus design and an intelligent room lighting sensor for higher energy conservation. The LH50 can also connect to external devices through a USB 2.0 connection for playing MP3 music and showing JPEG images, though for HD viewing the device is equipped with four HDMI 1.3 ports.
The LH50 costs a good couple hundred more than its non-Web-enabled cousin in the company's line--easily enough to buy an external Netflix device and then some. Its performance wasn't as good as some of the better LCDs we've tested, albeit still decent enough to pass most viewers' muster, especially in terms of color accuracy. For fans of Internet video who don't want one more box, however, those issues might be worth the sacrifice for the LG LH50, which for now is the most well-featured Interactive HDTV available. The

LH50 series will be released in 47 and 42-inch sizes, though only the 47LH50 47-inch version is currently available at an MSRP of $1,999. LG says to expect the 42-inch version to hit in late summer 2009

Toshiba includes 3.5-inch External HDD

Toshiba’s first foray into the world of large-form-factor external hard drives “Toshiba 3.5-inch External HDD.” That said, the product itself looks nice. Good looking, shock-resistant, though at $160 for a terabyte, a little bit pricey.
It’s features USB 2.0 and eSATA interfaces, and has an AC adaptor for power. It’s a 5400RPM drive, which is a little disappointing. The presser says it's available now, but we've been looking and have yet to find it on Toshiba's retail site or other online retailers like Amazon. When it does show its face, expect it to cost $130 for the 640GB model and $160 for a cool 1TB.

iPhone OS 3.1 beta Includes New Features

Apple released an update to the iPhone OS 3.1 beta tonight, making the new version of the software available to registered developers. We know from the first OS 3.1 beta released earlier this month, Voice Control over Bluetooth and non-destructive video editing have already been added to the softwarbeta 2 enables them to connect to their devices wirelessly instead of requiring them to be tethered for development purposes with Instruments. The WiFi connection supports all the same features a developer would get when tethered. the “Save” and “Save as Copy” options from beta 1 have been changed to “Trim Original” and “Save as New Clip” for clarity, and another change—possibly included in the first 3.1 beta as well—keeps the user’s “Now Playing” queue intact across syncs.

Baseball playing robots created by Japanese professor

Look out Ichiro Suzuki and Daisuke Matsuzaka. A pair of baseball-playing robots that can pitch and hit with incredible results have been developed in Japan. The pitching robot, with its three-fingered hand, can throw 90 percent of its pitches in the strike zone, won't need any relief from the bullpen and never asks for a pay raise.
The batting robot, which has a sensor to determine if pitches are strikes or balls, hits balls in the strike zone almost 100 percent of the time, doesn't swing at pitches outside the strike zone, and is guaranteed to pass all drug tests.
The two robots were created by University of Tokyo professor Masatoshi Ishikawa.
"The demand level of the robotics technology of each robot is very high," Ishikawa said. "What was difficult was to create a mechanism to satisfy such a high level of demand."
The pitching robot throws a plastic foam ball at 25 miles per hour, but Ishikawa is hoping to increase the speed to 93 mph and make it able to throw off-speed pitches like curves and sliders.
Ishikawa is also working on getting the batting robot to be able to hit to all parts of the field.
The robots don't resemble humans but instead the type of robots on a car assembly line.
Japan boasts one of the leading robotics industries in the world, and the government is pushing to develop the industry as a road to growth. Automaker Honda has developed the child-sized Asimo, which can walk and talk.

The latest in HD technology with the SAMSUNG LN52A650 flat screen TV.

The Samsung LN52A650 52 inch most popular television. It has a razor sharp picture that really has to be seen to be appreciated.. sound, setup, calibration, ease of use, price and all the other areas one might look at in a television besides display quality are also all top notch as well, with the only complaint I might have is that the screen is shiny and seems to pick up light reflections more easily because of this then some other HDTV screens I have saw. 10 / 10 score for my Samsung LN52A650 review score. These are what make the Samsung LN52A650 52-inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color stand out from the crowd. Its flexibility lets you enjoy MPEG and JPEG files stored on external devices by connecting through a side-mounted USB 2.0. Experience great and clear audio when you connect your MP3 player with its two hidden, downward-firing side-mounted 2.2-channel dome speakers built into the TV. Also, the TruSurround solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers.

Most of the other televisions we have owned have been superior for their time as we are really a junkie for performance and product research, and all of them had their own subtle flaws, but not the Samsung ln52A650 it seems.

Features:
  • include 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
  • 4ms response time
  • Transparent and OpaqueColor (TOC) bezel
  • 4 HDMI 1.3 ports
  • Sports and Game modes for a great presentation of action scenes,
  • touch of colorauto motion plus 120Hz

Video of new mind-controlled wheelchair

The users can use their Brain to control simply by thinking of which direction to head towards

A team of researchers have created a new mind-controlled wheelchair

A team of researchers led by professor Charles Xavier Kazuo Tanaka from University of Electro-Communications has developed a prototype of an electric wheelchair. The users can use their mind to control simply by thinking of which direction to head towards. The signals are displayed on a panel in almost real time and translated into instructions to steer the motorised wheelchair, the researchers said.
Sensors covering the riders head pick up these control thoughts via unique changes in EEG waves, and tell the chair how to move. Laser sensors also scan the surrounding area to prevent collisions.Though the technology is in a raw form now, it looks promising. It’s amazing that the wheelchair is 80% accurate in interpreting the users intentions and moving in the desired direction.
