The LG LH50 Series is a Full 1080p LCD HDTV series from LG's 2009 lineup. It uses a slightly different method of delivering 200Hz than its competitors. Rather than insert frames to create smoother motion, it uses backlight control to insert black frames instead. The result is great but on-par with its competitors rather than a point to set them apart. At a
native resolution of 1920x1080 it handles 1080p images beautifully and without any visual aberrations and the design and sound quality from the speakers is superb. The LH50 Series is an upgrade to the LH40 series and although both series include a 120Hz refresh rate, the LH50 series is LG's first HDTV series to feature ethernet connectivity which the LH40 series lacks. The LH50 Series includes four HDMI inputs and a USB port for access to digital music and photos. It also has LG's Smart Energy Saving Plus design and an intelligent room lighting sensor for higher energy conservation. The LH50 can also connect to external devices through a USB 2.0 connection for playing MP3 music and showing JPEG images, though for HD viewing the device is equipped with four HDMI 1.3 ports.
The LH50 costs a good couple hundred more than its non-Web-enabled cousin in the company's line--easily enough to buy an external Netflix device and then some. Its performance wasn't as good as some of the better LCDs we've tested, albeit still decent enough to pass most viewers' muster, especially in terms of color accuracy. For fans of Internet video who don't want one more box, however, those issues might be worth the sacrifice for the LG LH50, which for now is the most well-featured Interactive HDTV available. The
LH50 series will be released in 47 and 42-inch sizes, though only the 47LH50 47-inch version is currently available at an MSRP of $1,999. LG says to expect the 42-inch version to hit in late summer 2009
